A green meme

I like memes that inspire me to think about life from a different angle.

My usual angle is best described as eco-Christian, so I thought if I wrote a meme along those lines it might be fun for those who complete it to think about things from that perspective, especially if that’s not their usual way of looking at the world. Here goes.

What’s the Bible verse/passage that best describes the way you think the world should be?
‘They spent their time learning from the apostles, and they were like family to each other. They also broke bread and prayed together. Everyone was amazed by the many miracles and wonders that the apostles worked. All the Lord’s followers often met together, and they shared everything they had. They would sell their property and possessions and give the money to whoever needed it. Day after day they met together in the temple. They broke bread together in different homes and shared their food happily and freely, while praising God. Everyone liked them, and each day the Lord added to their group others who were being saved.’ Acts 2:42-47, CEV

When was the last time you rode a bicycle?
Februrary, in Sangkhlaburi, Thailand. It was great, even the hilly bits, and gave me a new appreciation for lightweight bikes (mine is like pedalling through treacle in comparison).

Have you ever written to an MP or other ‘powers that be’ about a green issue? If so, what was it? Is you do this often, what was the last one?
I should do more of this, though I love Tearfund’s SuperBadger application, which helps me email people about all kinds of issues. This year I’ve communicated with Dorset County Council about maintaining rights of way, but that’s a bit of a borderline green issue. Before that, it was probably complaining to our MP and Stagecoach about the bus timetable and train timetable not connecting, which is a real disincentive for people to use public transport and a source of major angst in our household.

What’s your favourite green product?
That’s hard. I like both Ecover hand soap (smell gorgeous and lavendery) and Lush Aromacreme deodorant because (a) it works and (b) it doesn’t contain aluminium. So I choose both. It’s my meme, and I’ll do what I like. ; D

What’s your favourite source of ‘green’ clothing?
Almost certainly charity shops. I don’t buy as much from charity shops as I’d like, because (a) I’m not a size 8/10/12, which seem to be the most common sizes, and (b) you have to visit them often to find the best stuff, and I work from home, so don’t often find myself on the high street with a spare half-hour. I did get a green (literally green, that is) top on my birthday in one of our local charity shops, though.

What’s your most unusual green handy hint?
When I get talking to some people, they think that washing clothes at 40 degrees and switching the light off when you leave the room are revolutionary. If you’ve not been used to doing them, then I suppose they are a good start, but I need more hardcore greenisms to inspire me. Stuff like using soapnuts to do an economy (30-minute) wash in coldish water on the night rate of an economy 7 tariff is more the scale I’m thinking of. And then, obviously, line-drying rather than using a tumble drier.

I also like all the old-school economies that also happen to be green: watering plants with washing-up water, growing your own vegetables, only using the oven if you have lots of things to fill it with, that kind of thing.

Look forward to reading your answers. I tag Lilian and Maria. If you do the meme, please post a link below.  For those of you who you don’t have a blog, feel free to leave your answers below, or bung them on your Facebook profile and post a link to that. I’d love to hear your thoughts. Thanks!

  1. [...] not a description of particular circumstances in the same way that Sarah’s chosen passage (Acts 2:42-47) was, but never mind. The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the LORD has annointed me [...]

  2. Hello, I have done the meme and I think we are going to make sausage casserole for lunch. Not that we were planning to throw sausages away, but after reading your sausage post we felt like eating sausage casserole! :)
